RoSBNet 2011 will concentrate on “Higher Level” Structures across disciplines:
Biology Theme: Bottom up and top down approaches for constructing artificial cells and multi-cellular systems.
Electrical/Computer Engineering Theme: Organizational principles and protocols in computer networked systems.
Control/Systems Engineering Theme: Modelling analysis and architectural principles of complex networked systems – how to build large networks.
Moreover, we will consider the Ethical, Legal and Societal Implications of ‘dual use’: the danger of using Synthetic Biology designs both for peaceful and military aims.
Confirmed Speakers for this year’s event are:
Dr Jo Husbands (U.S. National Academy of Sciences, USA)
Dr James Revill (University of Sussex, UK)
Dr Piers Millett (United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland)
Professor Stefan Eriksson (Uppsala University, Sweden)
Dr Jim Whitman (University of Bradford, UK)
Dr Alexander Kelle (University of Bath, UK)
Professor Koichi Takahashi (Laboratory of Biochemical Simulation, Riken, Japan)
Professor Michael Jewett (Chemical and Bioengineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, USA)
Professor Ricard Solé (Complex Systems Lab, University of Papeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain)
Professor Dek Woolfson (University of Bristol, UK)
Dr Mauricio Barahona (Imperial College London, UK)
Dr Orkun S. Soyer (University of Exeter, UK)
A Poster Session will be held on Day 2 of the Workshop (21st July) and everyone attending is invited to bring a poster to display their work. If you are interested in contributing, please provide details on the registration form with your Title and Abstract (Max 200 words).
Two special events have been scheduled for this year’s workshop. As part of our ELSI activities, a special panel has been organized for the morning of the 21st July by Dr Alexander Kelle, University of Bath. This panel, which will be chaired by Dr Kelle, will discuss the issue of ‘dual use’ of synthetic biology. Moreover, the afternoon will be devoted to discussions on research collaborations and exchange of ideas that have culminated after almost three years of meetings and discussions under RoSBNet.
If you are not a member of RoSBNet but have an interest as a researcher in Synthetic Biology there is a fee payable to cover your costs, please indicate on the form which package will best suit your requirements. Funding may be available for postgraduate students who wish to attend as a Day Delegate (This will cover the Workshop Fee, Lunch and Coffee). If you are interested please indicate this on the Registration Form and we will contact you.
Full Travel and venue information can be found on our RoSBNet Webpage but if you have any further questions please contact Diane Chung who will be happy to help, at diane.chung@eng.ox.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0)1865-283384.
